Hiring with Clarity, Not Just Speed
In a growing agency, hiring often feels urgent. Open roles need to be filled, and teams need support quickly.
However, through my experience, I have realized that hiring the right person is far more valuable than hiring the fastest. In real estate marketing especially, where the work demands both strategic thinking and execution, skill alone is not enough.
I have found that qualities like ownership, adaptability, and intent to grow play a much bigger role in long-term success. Hiring, therefore, becomes less about closing positions and more about building a team that aligns with the way the organization thinks and works.
Building Processes that Enable Performance
As the team grows, the absence of clear processes can quickly lead to inefficiencies.
While working across different HR functions, I started focusing on bringing more structure into how things operate, whether it was streamlining hiring workflows, improving onboarding experiences, or introducing consistent feedback mechanisms.
These processes are not meant to restrict teams. In fact, I have seen that when systems are clear, people are able to focus better, collaborate more effectively, and deliver stronger outcomes.
Creating Frameworks that Drive Ownership
Another key learning for me has been the importance of clarity in roles and expectations.
Introducing frameworks like defined responsibilities, KRAs, and KPIs helps individuals understand how their work contributes to the larger goals of the organization. It also builds a sense of accountability, which is essential in a consultancy environment.
From what I have observed, frameworks are not about control. They are about alignment. They create a shared understanding of what success looks like.
Building Capabilities from Within
One of the most valuable shifts in my thinking has been around capability building.
Instead of relying only on external hiring, I have seen the impact of investing in the people already part of the organization. Identifying skill gaps, encouraging learning, and enabling cross-functional exposure helps build stronger, more versatile teams.
When individuals feel supported in their growth, their contribution becomes more meaningful and consistent.
Navigating the Challenges of Team Building
Building the right team is not without its challenges.
There have been situations where speed had to be balanced with quality in hiring, where aligning expectations required continuous effort, and where culture needed to be shaped through everyday actions rather than defined in a single initiative.
Through these experiences, I have learned that team building is not a one-time effort. It is an ongoing process that requires intention, adaptability, and consistency.
What We Are Building at Nine Degree
At Nine Degree, the focus is not just on expanding the team, but on building it thoughtfully.
We are working towards creating an environment where ownership, creativity, and accountability are part of everyday work. Where processes support performance, and where employee experience is seen as a key driver of outcomes, not an afterthought.
Because ultimately, the kind of work we deliver externally is a direct reflection of the strength of our internal team.
Key Takeaways from the Journey
A few insights have stood out through this journey:
- Hiring right creates more impact than hiring fast
- Clear processes enable better performance
- Frameworks bring alignment and accountability
- Culture is built through everyday actions
- In a consultancy, people are the core of the offering
Looking Ahead
Building a strong team is a continuous journey.
As we move forward, the focus remains on strengthening this foundation, because the success of a marketing consultancy is deeply tied to the people behind it.
From my experience so far, one thing is certain: when the right people, processes, and mindset come together, they do not just support growth. They define it.
